At Yale It Is Different

For John, BLUFMartyville, and every other college and university is a world unto itself.  Nothing to see here; just move along.

Thanks to a post on Facebook by Doctrine Man I found this post by Ms Katie J. M. Baker, at Jezebel.  The post title and lede sum up the situation.
Yale Officially Declares 'Nonconsensual Sex' Not That Big of a Deal

The word "rape" does not factor into Yale's new report on how the university is handling sexual misconduct; instead, the act is described as "nonconsensual sex," and it's usually punishable by "written reprimand."  (Sometimes rapists have to spend some time thinking about respect!)  According to the report, five of the six people Yale identified as nonconsensual sex-havers over the past six months either graduated without much stress or will be returning to campus in the fall.

There is a certain amount of cynicism in the Jezebel post, and not without reason.  One of the things I find interesting is that colleges and universities around the country, while having moved away from the whole in loco parentis thing as the 1960s rolled on, now have their own police and "courts" and their own ways of dealing with what outside the ivy covered walls would be treated as crime.  It does save the surrounding towns money.  But, it is justice?  Is it in conformance with our Constitution?

Of course, the whole issue of rape makes it even more difficult.  Sorting out the truth is often difficult and the protection of the rights of both the victim and the accused often turn on the presence of lawyers.

Just one more "fundamental transformation of America."

At least at a state school, there are police on campus to file a report.

If a woman has been raped, who does she report to at a private college and do they offer her the opportunity to file a police report?

Yale has it's own police department.

"The Yale Police Department has 87 sworn police officers with full powers of law enforcement and arrest. Our officers are armed and patrol the campus on foot, by motorcycles, on mountain bikes, and in cars equipped with computers and radio communications systems. If minor offenses involving University rules and regulations are committed by a Yale student, the police may also refer the individual to the Yale College Dean’s Office or other academic officials. Yale Police personnel work closely with local, state, and federal police agencies, including the FBI, Secret Service, and Department of Justice, on campus events, regional law enforcement matters, training, and significant investigations concering the campus community."
